Zovirax is used for the acute treatment of herpes zoster

Zovirax which contain Acyclovir is a synthetic nucleoside analogue active against herpesviruses. Acyclovir Tablets are formulations of an antiviral drug for oral administration.

Indications:

  • These tablets are used for the suppression (prevention of recurrences) of recurrent herpes simplex infections in immune competent patients.
  • These drugs are indicated for the prophylaxis of herpes simplex infections in immune compromised patients.
  • Zovirax tablets are indicated for the treatment of varicella (chickenpox) and herpes zoster (shingles) infections.

Contraindications:

Acyclovir is contraindicated for patients who develop hypersensitivity to acyclovir or valacyclovir.

Warnings:
Acyclovir capsules and tablets are intended for oral ingestion only. Renal failure, in some cases resulting in death, has been observed with acyclovir therapy. Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura hemolytic uremic syndrome (TTP/HUS), which has resulted in death, has occurred in immune compromised patients receiving acyclovir therapy.

Drug interactions:

Aciclovir is eliminated primarily unchanged in the urine via active renal
tubular secretion. Any drugs administered concurrently that compete with this
mechanism may increase aciclovir plasma concentrations. Probenecid and cimetidine increase the AUC of aciclovir by this mechanism, and reduce
aciclovir renal clearance. Similarly increases in plasma AUCs of aciclovir and
of the inactive metabolite of mycophenolate mofetil, an immune suppresant
agent used in transplant patients have been shown when the drugs are
coadministered. However no dosage adjustment is necessary because of the
wide therapeutic index of aciclovir.

Side effects:

  • Like all medicines, these tablets can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
  • Contact your doctor at once if you have a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat (angioedema), difficulty breathing or swallowing.
  • Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you notice any of the following effects or any not listed.
  • Common (occurs in less than 1 in 10 users): dizziness, headache, feeling or being sick, diarrhoea, stomach pain, skin rashes, itching, tiredness, sensitivity to sunlight or artificial light (e.g. sunbeds), fever.

Storage:

Store at room temperature. Protect from heat, light and moisture. Keep away from reach of children.
